| Welcome to my Chemistry Research webpage. This page reflects the work I have done and continue to do over the summer of 2001 in the Department of Chemistry at Augustana College. The work was done to fulfill the research component of the Chemistry major which I am working toward completing. Advisors for the project are Dr. Gary Earl and Dr. Arlen Viste. The objectives of the project are to learn to carry out FT-IR, Raman, and NMR spectroscopy proficiently as well as learn computational methods with Jaguar and ADF software.
The spectroscopy will involve using the new accessories for the Nicolet FT-IR, further exploration of the OceanOptics R-2000 Raman, and if time allows exploration of multinuclear molecules and relaxation times with the NMR. The spectra obtained can be found on my Spectra page. Jaguar and ADF will be used to examine these molecules in various models, and it will also be an opportunity to become acquainted with the new ADF software. More specific activites can be found on the research cotnract and independent study program forms. The research contract and the independent study forms can be viewed by clicking on these links -> Independent Research Contract Independent Study Program Course Proposal These documents are only a starting point for the research and other areas and instruments may be explored. A minimum of 104 hours will be spent in the lab over the months of June and July (52 each session - 104 for the full term). I will be keeping a detailed notebook and posting that on this page. At the conclusion of the research I will present a chemistry seminar covering my research and the results I found. In the spring of 2002 I plan toward presenting a paper at the South Dakota Academy of Sccience and at the Augustana Student Symposium. After using these instruments exensively over the summer I may also write up new or revised instruction sheets for taking spectra. All of the work on this page and the pages within reflect the work of Mark Helberg unless otherwise noted and cited on my References page. Webpages for the instruments, software and other references can be found on the Links page. Thank you for visiting my webpage.
